Antique Chinese Bronze Buddha Statue
Quan Yin
Avalokiteshvara in Royal Ease
Circa: Mid Qing, 17th-18th Century
H 13.75 in.(35cm), W 7.5 in.(19cm), D 6 in.(15cm)
Condition: gilt loss, patina

An inward, poised and stylized Quan Yin, showing distinctly Chinese attributes with little Tibetan influence. The bronze surface is heavily patinated with mottled mineral deposits in rich greens with formations of malachite among the shimmering gold of the remaining gilding.

Broad full-cheeked face, symmetrical array of ornaments, upright and immovable seated posture, she is poised in royal ease on a double lotus throne with petals strung in unadorned rows, holding a prayer mala in her right hand with the left held as if to present a lotus. The simplicity of design extends to the back of the piece, where the lines of the headdress and robes have been treated with an almost geometric symmetry. The effect is of monumentality in miniature; magnificence and unchangeable power exalted by limitless compassion. On the front of her crown is the image of Amitabha Buddha, of whom she is an emanation.
