Micronesian
Carrying Karoko Netsuke
Signature: unsigned, Mid 18th Century H

Condition: usage wornA
very old and classic netsuke, triangulated in shape as was customary at the time,
carved from walrus tusk, showing the glassy surface, blue color around the age
cracks, and the subtle translucence that are qualities of the material. Cream
to gold in color with age patina and wear of handling, yet all the elements are
complete, depicting a foreigner, possibly a Micronesian, holding a Karako on his
back with his left arm, while in his right hand he carries a fan. The man wears
a simple garment with a draped collar and tied sash; his feet are bare. The child
holds on to his perch, his hair in two coils and the bow of his haragake bib tied
at the back. A rare 18th Century netsuke.
