This
netsuke depicts Seiobo, a Chinese Taoist immortal sennin with a giant longevity
peach. He is dressed in court costume, standing with his head raised, and stroking
his beard in a happy yet contemplative pose.
The netsuke is carved by Isshi, a late 19th century artist known for his
Shibayama style carvings. Here, by detailing the sennin's robe with incised patterns,
but emphasizing the pronounced grain of the ivory peach with high hand polishing,
the netsuke is executed with a sophisticated contrast and balance, resulting in
finesse that appeares to be accentuated with time. Despite being slightly worn
due to its age, the netsuke is well preserved and in mint condition.
