A
mid-twentieth century netsuke, a grouping thinly carved from a single blade
of ivory, polychrome with pale colors of brown ochre and coral, depicting floating
lotus leaves with three turtles at play on large veined lotus leaves, one of which
is graced with an open lotus blossom. The turtle’s shells are the natural cream
color of the material polished to a satin finish; their eyes are inlaid black
coral. Himotoshi are two small holes on the underside.
