Antique Japanese Bronze Censer
Shishi Phoenix
Hexagon Oval Incense
Burner Meiji, Circa: 19th century H 19in.(48cm), W 10 in.(25cm), D 7 in.(18cm)
Condition: One handle loosen, o.a. excellent! This
massive and handsome dark bronze censer epitomizes the elegance and enduring artistry
of Japanese craftsmen. Even in the Meiji era when standards of excellence had
to meet the challenge of a demanding export market, the essential esthetics of
the Japanese tradition persisted. Although this censer is large, it is dwarfed
by comparison with a large temple censer which would be kept constantly kindled
and which matriculating monks were required to lift and move out of their path
as it burned hotly, in order to complete the last few steps of their journey of
preparation. This
censer is a household piece embellished with bird and chrysanthemum motifs. The
relief carving is lyrical and realistic. On the handles are Phoenix heads; the
feet of the censer are curved into foliate forms. The lid is bordered with lotus
designs. On the top of the lid is a crouching guardian Foo Dog with flowing mane,
its tail thrust upward and divided into three main sections.
