A
tall and graceful okimono, carved from the solid center section of a quality elephant
tusk, light cream in color with striations, cross-hatching and the undulating
markings of the layers, as on the upper back of the piece where concentric circles
form. Well carved, with unpigmented engravings describing the elaborate embroidery
of the robes, with textured shibori and motifs of ocean waves. An obi completely
covered with woven or embroidered design is worn by the bride and a fan is carried;
the gradual widening of the open fan symbolizing happiness. Her headdress, the
tsuno kakushi, only covers part of the head so that the kanzashi hair ornaments
remain visible. Fine carving of the layers of draped and folding fabric distinguish
the artistry of the piece, lending a sense of lightness and fluid movement.
