Shakyamuni in Thai style dating to the Lanna kingdom established in the 12th Century,
a tradition emphasizing unembellished simplicity and the dignity of spiritual
sentiment. The unadorned Buddha figure sits in meditative asana and bhumisparsa
mudra, the mudra of calling the earth to witness his attainment of pristine enlightened
mind, on a lotus throne atop a faceted plinth. In contrast to the smooth uninterrupted
surfaces of the torso, the head is graced with a highly detailed rendering of
the coiled locks which seem to radiate from the base of the flaming usnisha atop
his head, a feature of Thai Buddhas symbolizing the luminosity of perfected consciousness.
Overall dark patina of umber with a satin surface.
