Exceptional in the classic simplicity of its conception, authentic and unmannered execution, exemplary of its age; small in size and practical for use with two openings in the carving as himotoshi. Carved from fine tusk tip ivory, cream color with age patina, bearing a silky finish, engraved with delicacy and restraint. Depicting with freshness and unaffected sweetness, a karako in traditional child’s attire engraved with chrysanthemum embroideries and topped with the scalloped bib. An auspicious talisman, the baby holds in his right hand an oogi, or wish-granting fan, while in his left he wields a splendid specimen of ling chi, the plant of long life.
