Rare
and unusual representation of Kannon displaying the Western influence which penetrated
Japan during the Edo era. Carved with exceptional skill in fine quality ivory,
cream to honey color, lightly stained, polished to a silken semi-gloss surface
with a mellow patina of age. Reverent treatment is highly exceptional in the netsuke
tradition, which lends itself more to humor and irony. As well the position of
the hands holding the rosary is unusual and resembles icons of Christian figures
and saints. A straightforward seriousness communicates reverence and devotion.
While
already assured of Buddhahood, Kannon remains in this world to comfort suffering
sentient beings. Perhaps because of the maternal, feminine traits and gentle expressions,
statues of Kannon inspire a greater affection in Japan than do any other Buddhist
figures.
