Jotomba-Jou Netsuke

This netsuke is portraying one of the oldest in Japanese Legend: Jotomba - An old man named Jou and his wife Uba in the the mist of Lake Takasago. Together they are the symbol of a loving couple living in perfect harmony till eternity. As shown here, Jou is characterized with a rake that rake in good fortune, and the crane symbolizes his longevity; (Uba is using a broom to sweep away all troubles.) The netsuke is carved from prefered natural material, which appears moist in cream and white color with distinct cross-hatching grain and striations. The carving is artfully accomplished with minute details and signed in the base. It remains in pristine condition with no defect or damage of any kind observed.
