Complete thirty-two
pieces ivory chess set, beautifully hand carved from quality ivory. One set in
natural ivory color, the other stained in light gold tea color. Emperor and warrior
figures carved in costumes representing Edo era Shogun and samurai warriors. Carved
in round on plinths from a single piece of ivory. All chess piece are in excellent
condition. There is no crack or hairline, only one white bishop has a chip to
his staff, and the board case missing a wood strip near the edge. The
ivory is beautifully aged. It appears to come from the tip section of Asian tusks,
with a patina varying from a rich gold and cream white. The detail is finely picked
out and has worn gently over the years. Private Collection | |
