classic antique netsuke size okimono, compact and well carved from the center
of the tusk tip, close grained and golden in color with a patina of age, marked
with striations and layers, showing a satin finish with glossy highlights developed
from handling over time. Representing a court drummer playing the kotsuzumi, the
shoulder drum which is used in gagaku, the court music of the Imperial Household
of Japan. The figure wears the court hat tied under his chin, embroidered robes
and trousers, smiling as he beats the kotsuzumi with his right hand.
