A fine
and unctuous ivory, creamy white in color, with a glossy, jewel-like and translucent
surface. Held in the hand this netsuke size okimono is impressive in the quality
of the material, the grain so fine that the characteristic ivory markings are
barely visible. Carved from the extreme tip of a pure white Asian tusk. A welcoming
lightness is engendered in the comfortable roundness of forms which is well suit
to use as an netsuke. The faces of the mother and child are mild and gentle; the
dog with its curling tail bows to his masters playfully in this little scene full
of natural affection, and
the selection of details that heighten the evocation of a sweet moment of ordinary
intimacy.
