This
deeply carved pair of ivory represents the vigorous spirit of the traditional
Chinese guardian lions. The massive lion heads are starring forward, ears extended
like horns from finely incised spiraled curl manes, large opened jaws barring
teeth and tongues. In addition to these fine details, the pair are deeply carved
in symmetrical arrangements, which accentuates the natural beauty of the material,
and enhanced the sculptural effect in these muscular figures.
Carved
from quality tusk, with strong grains, original aged light cream patina and an
even shine to the piece. There are no noticeable damages except a
hairline in the base of the male, and an age crack in the base of the lioness.
The pair are incised with two classic characters, which attributed to the Emperor
Qianlong (1736-1795). However, their fine condition is a cause for doubt of their
attributed date.
