A
uniquely designed lotus stem netsuke. When turned the freely floating, individually
carved seeds vibrate and shift, rocking within their respective cavities. Perhaps
the seeds were carved out, like a puzzle ball, though it is impossible to know
for sure how the carver managed to execute this clever design. The high quality
19th century ivory has aged attractively and reflects light off its plump, bell
shaped seed pod. Etched lotus petals sweep down one side while its stem loops
at the top to form a himotoshi. A metal pin has been struck through at some point
in this pieces’ history in order to hold the top bit together . A distinctive
and antique netsuke in fair condition.
