We
are delighted to offer an extremely rare pair of large antique Anglo Indian ivory
carvings. Despite our tireless search on the World Wide Web, we've found that
none are available, and particularly not at this large size. Available for auction
here is for the larger of the two carvings. The fisherman figure measures at 12.5
inches in height, and weighs 26 ounces, all without the wood base.
In this tall, standing and understated presence of an Indian ivory carving,
the bearded fisherman of Anglo features is identified by his catches of the day_
a fish in hand and another is caught between his two feet. The fisherman wears
a long robe, fastened at the front of a broad cloth belt in a long bow, a large
hat that is decorated with a fish atop of weaved patterns. Judging from the dynamic
pose and sumptuous artistry of this figure, early European influence is clearly
shown in the pair. The carving is probably from the workshops at Murshidabad in
North-Eastern India in the early 19th century.
Beautifully
marked and grained, the statue has an elegant cream white color on both front
and back side. There are a few small hairlines, and the figure is in very good
condition, except for a small crack on the rope held in the fisherman's right
hand.
