Period Manju Netsuke
Boatman
Crossing the River
Signature: unsigned, Circa: Late 19th Century H
1.75 in.(4.5cm), W 1.75 in.(4.5cm), D 0.75 in.(2cm)
Condition: excellent! A
classic manju in shape and size, made of two joined discs, seen by the arrangement
of himotoshi, cream color with age patina, lightly carved in sunk relief leaving
a tactile expanse of smooth ivory, depicting the passage of a boatman through
the pilings, his head turned away as he steers his craft. The carving is accomplished
with simplicity of technique that has a quality of folk style, yet the quickly
limned bird on the reverse displays a practiced hand.
