The rich spiritual life of Bali with its panoply of colorful ritual and celebration centers around the traditions and iconography of Hinduism. Shiva is a most important deity in this tradition; here he is seen as the lord of fire, symbolizing his power to destroy as well as to create. Entirely covered with a patina of green and black, the figure dances to the flames which rise from his body, surmounted by a crown of fire.
