Hotei
is one of the seven Gods of Luck. As depicted here, He is a cheerful and contented
deity, and is often shown in the company of children. This late Meiji netsuke
of Hotei the Happy Buddha with two kids in the bag reflects his joyous spirit
and whimsical charms.
The netsuke is well carved, it has a three colors scrimshaw work with a
high handed smooth finish. The ivory has a beautiful grain, and an aged creamy
patina. The signature of the artist is located at the bottom. It is in perfect
condition with no losses or restorations of any kind.
