Green
Tara, the protective deity, born from the tears of the left eyes of Avalokiteshvara,
the Bodhisattva of Mercy; the tear that fell from his right eye became White Tara,
Goddess of Long Life. Green Tara is a bodhisattva who helps us to overcome obstacles
and cultivate and generate our inner compassion. She is a powerful goddess, and
most worshipped in Nepal and Tibet.
As
depicted here, Green Tara is
seated in royal ease (lalitasana) on an oval double lotus base. Her left hand
in the jhana mudra in the gesture of teaching, with a lotus rises from her hand.
Her right hand which is elegantly arched in the varada mudra, the gesture of giving.
Adorned with jeweled necklaces, earrings and crown, her body is youthful and sumptuous
in the form of an eternally young girl, representing the illuminating aspect of
Tara that which is wisdom, compassion and strength. The gorgeously aged black
patina beautifully expresses the eternal beauty and resonant power of the embodied
Goddess.
