Chokaro is a sennin who carries a gourd, within which is a magic horse believed to be able to travels to heaven and other side of the world in minutes. Here in this unusual depiction, the magic horse appears rising from the gourd, yet he is tied to a loose ring before roaming skyward. The seemingly simple design is beautifully balanced, with curving back and ears poking through the neatly carved mane, front hooves are standing firm on the gourd, compactly forming a tactile netsuke from a single piece of natural material, marked with striations and light cream to gold in color, finished in a high hand polish, moist looking, dense and pure. Signature fluidly carved on base next to two himotoshi.
