A
newer Water Moon Quan Yin stands on the rocky banks of the Chinese island of Putuo
while below, a carp struggles against the powerful waves as a symbol of perseverance.
The wood is skillfully gilded with gold, deep burgundy, and sea blue. Bamboo trees
rise beneath the full moon. Carved in soft curving forms, Quan Yin's face and
torso are wonderfully contained and poised, a mellow but powerful energy rising
above the chaotic smashing of the sea's waves. Details like the jagged rock outcropping,
the scales of the carp, and the varied foliage peaking out of the gaps complete
the scene, a large and striking calm. In excellent condition.
