Japanese Antler Netsuke
Gama Sennin
Carrying Large Frog
Signature: Kyomasa. Circa: early 19th Century H.2.5
in.(6.35cm), W. 1 in.(2.5cm), D. 0.8 in.(2cm)
Condition: usage worn, overall very good! A
beautifully aged late 18th to 19th century cream color netsuke, representing the
beloved Gama Sennin grasping an enormous frog. Broad deep cutting of the dense
unyielding antler material creates a virile graphic quality, comprising all the
familiar aspects of the sennin, including his cloak of mugwort leaves, his benevolent
and whimsical expression, combining with a naturistic simplicity rendered
on the backside. The
netsuke is worn from
age and handling, the smooth surface, polished to a soft shine, has not lost any
of its details. A symbol of
prosperity, the frog of fortune is firmly in hand as Gama looks out smiling. Private Collection
