fitted rosewood base supports the four animals of power in this masculine and
energetic piece. The tiger, the lord of all land animals occupies the highest
position, symbolizing military prowess. Wrapping around his striped body is the
trunk of the elephant; the large beast a symbol of strength, sagacity, and prudence.
The elephant’s front right foot holds fast to the chest of the overturned leopard,
an emblem of bravery and martial ferocity. Attacking from behind is the lion,
known for his valor and energy. All four are carved with a sense of realism akin
to an African safari, particularly the centrally located elephant, his ears, tusks
and trunk beautifully realized with life-like detail. The cream colored ivory
exposes’ the animals’ ribs and smoothed contours; the stylized spots of the leopard
resemble miniature targets. There are signs of repair to the leopards front right
paw, and one leg of the rosewood base is missing. An engaging piece in good condition.
