Antique
Japanese Netsuke Ebisu
Catching
Fish Signature: unsigned, circa: early 1900S' h.
1.7 in.(4.5cm), w. 1.25 in.(3cm), d. 1 in.(2.5cm) Condition:
natural himotoshi, o.a. excellent! Ebisu,
one of the gods of abundance, in fine dense material, light cream in color, very
well carved with a portrait-quality head, engraving and sumi for the fine hair
lines and crosshatched surfaces of fabric. A pleasing contrast of broad areas
of smooth ivory on the back with the clustered details of the front--the face,
the flowing edges of fabric, the fish with its scales and upturned tail. A high
quality of artistry is evident in the subtle handling of the face, evoking qualities
of wisdom and benevolent optimism.
