Japanese Carved Carving
Mahakasyapa Rakan Dragon
Tamer Circa: late 19th-early
20th century H
9 in.(22cm), W 2 in.(5cm), D 1.75 in.(4cm)
Condition: minor age crack, o.a. good Mahakasyapa,
also known as the dragon taming arhat, is depicted in this okimono holding a dragon
with his left hand and the peach of immortality in his right. Sculpted from a
beautiful piece of ivory, the ahrat’s face is rendered in great clarity, from
the expressive eyes to the very shape of his face; cheekbones and protruding chin
giving the impression of an aged and weathered being. Etched details like his
stubble, eyebrows, and speckled hair add to this affect, as he sits in the lotus
position watching over the dragon, who's depiction is as equally painstakingly
rendered. The creature’s long carved through whiskers spill onto Mahakasyapa’s
wide lap as he purposefully holds the peach of immortality just beyond its gaping
jaws. A unique piece carved from a beautiful piece of ivory; with age cracks,
and in fair condition.
