A
manju, traditionally, is a type of Japanese sweet made from mochi or rice. It
was this favorite sweet that is the inspiration for this particular style of netsuke.
In this 20th century ivory manju netsuke, a dragon gracefully and intricately
detailed arches and roars in dynamic movement. The dragon in Chinese zodiac is
considered full of vitality, strength, exuberance and enthusiasm. Dragons are
natural leaders who willingly and it would often seen effortlessly take up great
responsibilities for family and society. This netsuke evokes this lucky charm
for those who would wear or hold it in their hand a reminder of a life lived fully
and with passion.
