Tibetan Jeweled Silver Gold Gilt Bronze Buddha Shakyamuni
Bhumisparsa
Mudra Origin:
Tibet, Circa: early 19th Century H
13 in.(33cm), W 9 in.(23cm), D 5.5 in.(14cm) Condition:
minor
imperfection, o.a. good This
antique Tibetan gilt bronze is an exceptional find. The shorter countenance on
the youthful face indicates that this statue has a deeper Tibetan ethnic influence
and is shaped by Indian gesture as opposed to the Chinese influences we see in
later Tibetan statuary. The five-pointed crown is indicative that this Buddha
represents the five Buddhas (Akshobhya, Virochana, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha and
Amoghasiddhi) in Mahayana tradition. At five kilogram the statue is especially
weighted, an indication that a longer and more deliberated process was applied
in the casting a process that requires greater degrees of mastery and skill from
the artist. This Shakyamuni bronze is gilded with silver and gold, a sacred three
metal cast with an inlay crystal urna. Remnant of red vermilion powder confirms
the statue has been worshipped in temples. With a minor crack on one prong, despite
its age the statue is in very good condition.
