Private Collection
A
superb example of low relief carving in ivory with the exquisitely thin and delicate
disk of ivory mounted on wood to give it sturdiness in use. Color is creamy white
with a slightly cool cast. This little Kagamibuta is a tour-de-force in flower
carving, showing a rich array of chrysanthemums in a study of overlapping flowers
and leaves, as finely carved white petals spray and curl, innermost petals not
yet fully opened, revealing seed clusters at the center. With additional flowers
glimpsed through the topmost blossoms, this work offers a miniature vision of
unending abundance and sheer beauty. Signed on reverse on inlaid mother-of-pearl
"Masakawa."
