Antique Tibeto-Chinese Gilt Bronze
Maitreya Buddha
Turning Dharma Wheel
Circa: Qing, 19th century and earlier

H 9.5 in.(24cm.) W 5.5 in.(14cm) D 4.5 in.(11.5cm)
Condition: very good!

Judging from the proportion, gesture and attributes of this gorgeous bronze, this Maitreya Buddha is unmistakably Chinese in origin. However, his slim and elongated body sitting with both legs pendant in a benevolent pose (bhadrasana), and his hands poised in the dharmacackra mudra, this Buddha retained much elegance, and almost in total resemblance of the early Tibetan Maitreya prototype. With his unusually large and elaborate crown and Indian style costume, finely carved jewels and hand-chased details, along with the aged bronze patina beneath the gold gilded surface abrasions, we can safely attributed the statue to the Qing dynasty, possibly made around 18th -19th century.
