Calligrapher Poet w. Scroll Okimono

Fine Antique Japanese Okimono
Calligrapher Poet
Holding Scroll

Signature: unsigned, Meiji, 19th Century

h. 5.25 in.(13.5cm), w. 3 in.(7.5cm), d. 1.5 in.(4cm)
Condition: hairline, age crack, o.a. very good!

A poet holds a scroll with the inscription: "Silent mountain where the distant pine dreams." In an ink painting the brushed scene would be viewed with the poem; here we see the youthful poet proudly holding his words aloft where they take on the palpable quality of three dimensions. A large piece of fine tusk ivory is sleekly carved, the face expressive and full of earnest character, the details finely accomplished, with deep flowing curves in the gathers of the robe and engraved floral designs.
