Antique
Indian Bronze Statuette
Parvati Seated
in Mediation Attributed to Kerala,
circa: 16th-18th century H
2.25in.(5.5cm), W 1.5 in.(4cm), D 1 in.(2.5cm)
Condition: worn with aged patina Remarkable
for its size, this ancient bronze Parvati is just two and a quarter inches high.
Perhaps used for meditation by a Hindu trader on a long voyage, or a traveler
making their way through a dense rainforest, the piece fits easily in one’s hand
or pocket. This pleasantly worn piece depicts Parvati, the Hindu goddess and wife
of Lord Shiva. She is a reminder of the virtues of Hindu tradition, specifically
the power of renunciation and the blessings of marital felicity. Sitting in a
meditative posture, she holds a lotus flower in her right hand and the Urn of
Wisdom in her left. A tiered conical hat, called a karandamukuta, rises from her
head.
