Antique Chinese bone carving depicting Bodhidharma, the popular patriarch of Zen Buddhism, who brought the faith from India to China, and who, on paying his respects and giving teachings to the Emperor’s court, retired into uninterrupted meditation for over nine years. Here he is seen with his staff, holding a jar of precious substances, the piece showing European influence in the style of the robes falling in graphic disarray. Finished with a high hand polish; patina of age.
