A bright
and robust contemporary netsuke, carved from the center of the dense and creamy
tip of the tusk. This representation of two bears wrestling with a globe is a
spirited contrast of color and surface texture as well as a faithfully realistic
rendering full of power and movement. The white bear stands firmly above his adversary,
claws gripping the globe, while the dark bear, its paws still on the ball but
its back legs flailing helplessly, has lost the game. The sparkling whiteness
of the standing bear is accentuated by tiny jewel-like details of teeth fully
carved and golden inlaid eyes, whereas the dark bear has black eyes of inlaid
coral and a graphic hatching of fur. The bear is regarded as a symbol of bravery
and strength and the two colors can be understood symbolically as well. In all
a fine piece carved from a superlative tusk tip of extremely fine grain and exceptional
whiteness and purity. Private Collection | |
