A peasant at market, blowing bubbles to attract buyers, a water bucket in hand for dipping his bubble pipe. He stands attired in peasant clothing that is nonetheless heavily embroidered, possibly announcing his wares as needlework, for on his back he carries a finely embroidered zafu, or cushion. Traditional Japanese homes do not have chairs, and cushions of various kinds are used for sitting, dining and meditation. Well carved from cream colored ivory, marked with striations and Schreger lines, age patina and remaining traces of sumi, blue, green and reddish pigment. Texturally detailed showing tabi with rope zori sandals.
