Amida

Celestial Buddha Amitabha

Edo Period, circa: 18th century and earlier
H 22 in.(55.88cm), W 8.5 in.(22cm), D 8 in.(20cm)
Condition: small losses and minor imperfections
An exquisite Amida Buddha on a beautifully crafted multi-planed pedestal, with left foot forward and hands in welcoming gesture (raigo-in), which indicates his descent from the Western Paradise to greet the souls of devotees. The serene facial features of Amida is carved in clear definition, his hair is lacquered in black, and skin in earth tone, with crystal inlaid for the ushnisha, and reverse-painted crystal for his downcast eyes. Still more remarkably is his gilded robe, for right down to the style and number of folds, the image is nearly identical to the Amida statue made by Kaikei (1185-1220) in the Kamakura period. In addition, the carving is an excellent example of the joined block hollow core sculptural technique designed to prevent cracks from occurring in time; whereby multiple parts of wood were carved and assembled for the lotus pedestal, and the head and body were consisted front and back halves joined on the sides. Which was an unique Japanese invention originally developed by Jocho of Heian period in the 11th century. In view of the construction technique and the aged patina on the gilded surface, along with a few small chips and losses of the lotus petals, we conservatively dated the statue as 18th century or earlier.
