This
exquisitely executed ivory tusk depicts a dragon boat loaded with a party of seven
gods, joyfully gathered together with all their various gifts on the barque of
life, sailing over the sea of existence, or perhaps racing in the dragon boat
festival which occurs on the 5th day of the 5th moon in Chinese calendar year.
The numerous figures with all their accoutrements utterly filling the little vessel,
the carved boat with its dragon prow and woodgrain convincingly engraved, the
ocean waves churning in swirling spirals behind lacy wavelets and whitecaps all
combine to create a veritable hubbub of glory in a little boat on the sea.
The figures are wonderfully realized with individual characterizations
full of detail and whimsical charm. In an even-toned cream color with age patina,
the okimono is signed on its base. Condition is matchless with no losses, cracks
or blemishes. Such mint condition can only be attributed to years of careful handling,
as well as to the superb quality of the Asian elephant ivory from which the work
was carved.
