Antique Chinese Ivory Carving
Elephant Bridge
Early 20th century, Excellent Condition!
H 3.25 in.(8.5cm.), W 15.5 in.(39cm.), D 1.25 in.(3cm.)
Measurement not including wood base

This is a good size ivory bridge. Measurements include an outside curve of 17 inches with a 15.5 straight line. Carved from quality Asian Elephant tusk, the ivory bridge depicts a family of seven elephants (symbol of prosperity and universal peace) with protruding tusks carved through swirling trunks. From the largest leading elephant to the baby which is last in line, the bulk and presence of these seven elephants are acutely captured.

The ivory bridge is finely polished with a even shine in an aged, original, light-cream patina. Though easily removable, the carving has been tightly secured to a custom made wood base. Perhaps for this reason, we observe no chip or hairline other than a small natural crack line of the tusk, which was carefully hidden on the reverse side by the carver.
