The
Chinese guardian lion is the protector of Buddhist faith. It is both a symbol
of Chinese imperial power, and the ineluctable force of Buddhist doctrine. Guardian
lions are traditionally shown with a ferocious expression. However, such prototype
doesn't apply here on this lion bridge, which is depicting a family of five guardian
lions are merrily out and about. The scene is perhaps inspired by the lion dance
in the Chinese New Year parade.
A
sweet sentiment told by a fun loving carver. This bridge of a happy lion family
is finely realized in an unique whimsical style. These lions are detailed with
finely incised hairlines, their tongues and teeth are intricately carved in details.
The bridge is carved from a single piece of quality ivory custom fitted on a hardwood
base. It has a cream white patina, there is no damage or hairlines, and is in
perfect condition.
