Chinese Carving
Shakyamuni
Head of Buddha
Origin: China, Circa: Qing, 19th century H
6.25 in.(16cm), W 4 in.(10cm), D 3.25 in.(8cm) Total Height including
custom wood base 8 inches
Condition: hairlines, o.a. very good! The
countenance of this 19th century Qing bust is particularly pronounced and exhibits
a particular suppleness of figure that is stylistically common in Chinese depictions
of the Buddha. The ushnisha, the crown protrusion of this statue as a masterfully
carved piece that is separate from the ivory base, is particularly unique and
is a defining characteristic of the bust. Shakyamuni's eyes resting in contemplation
are arched and symmetrical nearly closed full. The ears are stylistic, curling
like a seashell on top and then moving down to two strong bases on either side
of the Buddha's well endowed neck . The elongated ears can be seen a symbol of
the noble upbringing of the prince Siddhartha. The statue displays pronounced
third eye, a symbolic indicator of enlightened presence. The nose is broad and
strongly rendered. The lips are full and the chin pronounced. This ivory busts
sits on a beautiful grained hard wood base that is carved to give a sense of the
graceful shoulders of this Buddha. This ivory is beautifully aged and is in very
good condition. (SD)
